You know that feeling, don’t you? The one where everything seems to be going along just fine, and then – suddenly – it’s not. A switch flips, the ground shifts, and you’re struggling with overwhelm, exhaustion, or a feeling of simply not being “good enough.” For many neurodivergent (ND) women, this isn’t just an occasional bad day; it’s a cyclical, often bewildering, experience tied intimately to our hormones.
If you’ve ever wondered why your cycle, puberty, pregnancy, or perimenopause feels like it’s affecting you harder than it seems to affect others, you’re not imagining it. Emerging research increasingly suggests that neurodivergent women often experience a heightened sensitivity to hormone fluctuations throughout their lives.
Let’s talk about why this isn’t just “women’s issues” for us, but a profound interplay between our unique neurodevelopmental profile and the body’s natural rhythms, which are constantly being pressured by neuronormative and male-centric expectations.
The Unseen Battle: When Normal Fluctuations Wreck the System
Our hormones – particularly oestrogen and progesterone – are powerful players. They don’t just regulate our reproductive system; they profoundly influence our brain chemistry, impacting neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. While the foundational neurochemistry may be the same, the way our neurodevelopmental profiles respond to these hormonal shifts is often heightened.
Because ADHD and Autism involve differences in how we process information, those routine hormone fluctuations can significantly change how we function and how we feel.
The core of the issue lies in the mismatch. Society, workplaces, and cultural schedules are often built on neuronormativeassumptions and are historically and culturally rooted in male-centric expectations of linear, non-cyclical performance (the idea that productivity should be the same every day, all month). The system does not serve women.
Because the system is built on this rigid, male-centric model, women experience a functional conflict because their natural, cyclical rhythms are forced into a linear, inflexible environment. For the ND person, who is already expending massive energy masking and adapting to these non-negotiable, rigid structures, the hormonal shift makes that energy expenditure unsustainable and dramatically increases the resulting energy debt.
Those routine hormone fluctuations don’t cause the struggle; they expose how male centric neuronormative expectations fail to serve the whole population.
From First Bleed to Final Flush: Hormones Throughout the Lifespan
The impact of this heightened sensitivity isn’t confined to monthly cycles. It’s a lifelong journey:
1. Puberty: The Initial Tsunami
For many neurodivergent girls, puberty isn’t just awkward; it can be an overwhelming sensory and emotional assault. The initial surge and wild fluctuations of sex hormones can significantly amplify existing neurodivergent traits. [Molloy et al., 2021; Rucklidge, 2010].
2. The Monthly Cycle: PMS, PMDD, and Peak Overwhelm
Studies show a significant comorbidity between PMDD and both ADHD and Autism [Unwin et al., 2023]. Autistic women also consistently report higher rates of severe menstrual pain, irregular cycles, and greater psychological distress compared to non-autistic counterparts [Hassiotis et al., 2020]
3. Pregnancy & Postpartum: The Hormonal Chasm
The experience of pregnancy and the postpartum period involves dramatic hormonal shifts. The subsequent massive withdrawal of progesterone and oestrogen creates a functional and emotional change that can feel vast and overwhelming. Women with ADHD, for example, often experience heightened emotional variation during this intense period, struggles directly influenced by the extreme nature of these hormonal fluctuations [Winkler et al., 2022].
4. Perimenopause & Menopause: The Final Frontier (Often the Hardest)
Studies demonstrate that the declining and fluctuating oestrogen levels during perimenopause lead to a severe re-emergence or worsening of core ADHD elements… [Hansen et al., 2021]. Similarly, autistic women describe heightened sensory distress, increased anxiety, and greater difficulty with cognitive tasks during this period [Ames et al., 2022].
What Does This Mean for You?
Understanding this isn’t about blaming your hormones or how you process. It’s about informed self-compassion. If you’re an ND woman reading this, know that:
- Your experience is real and valid. You are not “overreacting.” The level of effort required to manage a rigid non-ND world is simply revealed by natural variations.
- The challenge is often environmental. We need to focus on building better structures, acknowledging our differences and the needs associated with that, and self-advocacy, not just trying to force the brain to comply.
- Knowledge is power. Understanding the interplay between your hormones and your neurodivergence is the first step towards demanding and creating environments that honour your needs.
This insight provides a crucial lens through which to view your struggles. It opens the door to targeted support, environmental adjustments, and ultimately, a more compassionate way of living.
