Finding the Right Therapist for ADHD: What You Need to Know

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms can lead to a variety of behaviours that can make it difficult to complete everyday tasks—both in childhood and as an adult. And while there is no cure for ADHD, finding a good therapist can drastically improve your quality of life. Not only can counselling help you better understand your condition, it can also show you how to manage behaviours that are causing you difficulty, such as chronic disorganisation or lateness.

It’s important to recognise that not all therapists will suit your specific needs, and that’s okay. With a bit of research, you can find out which type of therapist is best for you. The good news is that many types of specialists can support you with ADHD, each with their own specific skill set and strategies. Psychologists or therapists can help you manage symptoms and learn to cope with them. Coaches on the other hand, might address specific personal or career goals.

As a qualified and experienced therapist, the modality (type of therapy) I use is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. CBT can be an effective support for adults living with ADHD to develop new productive habits, as well as increase self-esteem and happiness. It also really helps to find someone who has lived experience of ADHD. It can bolster the therapeutic relationship, which in turn can lead to better outcomes for the client.
Amongst others, ADHD counsellors may help you with things such as managing emotional outbursts and impulsive behaviour, as well as making overwhelming tasks feel easier. This includes, but isn’t limited to:

  • Reframing thoughts
  • Approaches to time management
  • Building motivation
  • Turning goals into actions
  • Addressing social skills
  • Improving focus and concentration
  • Developing memory skills
  • Support for limiting distractions

Many experts believe that therapy is a good starting point, as focusing on healing, emotional regulation, and ADHD-specific strategies is an important base. Once you’ve worked through underlying emotional issues, future-oriented approaches such as ADHD coaching will be a lot more effective.
If any of this sounds like you, or you’re unsure of where to start, I offer a FREE 30min chat to help you pin down your needs and figure out if I’m the right therapist for you.
